TWO BEGGARS reface Thanks to every living soul. This was my 7th interview and as usual I was failed to crack. Disappointed so much and went to cafeteria. How crazy I am? Need money for survival,my family is at stake and here I’m having coffee with some bucks lended by my friends. Outside the window I saw a beggar staring at cafeteria. I enquired myself that a poor beggar wants something to drink. In helping nature I go near to him and I asked anything you want to eat? I will get you. Beggar: mind your business. Me: (angry ) I want to help you but you are such a rude. That’s how you became beggar here. Beggar: oh yeah? Who are you then? Me: even more angry tone I told I am a student who seeking job. Be respectful. Beggar: respectful? This is my restaurant. Was. I lost almost all my property in gambling.I had no sons, daughters. My wife died. This restaurant was turned to cafeteria recently. Whenever I saw some couples or some parents with their kids, I wish I could live like them. What I was gonna get by this life? All years right from birth I was begging. By seeing like those couples gives me satisfaction that I lived some meaningful life. And here you are making trouble by trying to help me. Piece of advice: don’t gamble in your life. Desire less. Making money is not important. Living peacefully with that money is important. After his advice I realize that I’m too a beggar. Two beggars had a nice conversation in the end. After his story one thing strikes me, “Everyone is beggar in existence, Some outside and some inside”

onam

In India Onam is an ancient festival which still survives in modern times. Kerala’s rice harvest festival and the Festival of Rain Flowers, which fall on the month of Chingam, celebrates the Asura King mahabali’s annual visit from Patala (the underworld). Onam is unique since Mahabali has been revered by the people of Kerala since prehistory. The King is so much attached to his kingdom that it is believed that he comes annually from the nether world to see his people living happily. It is in honour of King Mahabali that Onam is celebrated. The deity Vamana, also called Onatthappan,  is also revered during this time by installing a clay figure next to the floral carpet (Pookalam) .The birthday of Sri Padmanabhan, the presiding Deity of Thiruvananthapuram, is on the Thiruvonam day in the month of Chingam. Thiruonam day is the most important day of Onam

Pookkalam

The floral carpet, known as ‘Onapookkalam’,[3][8] is made out of the gathered blossoms with several varieties of flowers of differing tints pinched up into little pieces to serve the decorator’s purpose. It is considered a work of art accomplished with a delicate touch and a highly artistic sense of tone and blending. (In a similar manner North Indians make something called “Rangoli” which is made of powders of various colors.) When completed, a miniature pandal, hung with little festoons is erected over it.

Traditionally, Atthapookalams (pookalam made on the Atham day) included flowers endemic to Kerala and the Dashapushpam (10-flowers), but nowadays all varieties of flowers are used.[8] Earthen mounds, which look somewhat like square pyramids, representing Mahabali and Vamana are placed in the dung-plastered courtyards in front of the house along with the Pookalam, and beautifully decorated with flowers. In the recent years, the floral designs have evolved from the traditional circular shape to unique designs depicting different cultural and social aspects of Kerala life. All over Kerala, Pookalam competitions are a common sight on Onam day.[7] People start putting atha-pookalams from Atham ( First day of 10 day festival ) till thiruvonam, while some put Onam Pookalams till the 28th day after thiruvonam.

RUMI -sufi poet

A moment of happiness,
you and I sitting on the verandah,
apparently two, but one in soul, you and I.
We feel the flowing water of life here,
you and I, with the garden’s beauty
and the birds singing.
The stars will be watching us,
and we will show them
what it is to be a thin crescent moon.
You and I unselfed, will be together,
indifferent to idle speculation, you and I.
The parrots of heaven will be cracking sugar
as we laugh together, you and I.
In one form upon this earth,
and in another form in a timeless sweet land

My grandma’s stories: Japanese occupation, of horror and terror

Book of words

(This is the fourth part of an ongoing series recounting my grandma’s stories about her life and the old days in Singapore. Click here for the first, second and third part)

December 7, 1941 – Pearl Harbor in Hawaii came under a surprise military strike by the Japanese, who officially declared their ambitions in the Pacific. The United States entered World War II for the first time.

Two months later, the Japanese conquered the whole of Malaya, including Singapore, putting an end to more than a century worth of British colonization.

“Compared to the British who left us to our own devices, the Japanese constantly harassed us,” grandma recounted the war years when she grew up as a young teenage girl. “They were merciless, brutal and always beating innocent people up.”

The new order of the day became terror and scarcity, and the number one item on everyone’s list…
